Have you ever known something before you could explain how you knew it? A conversation felt “off.” A new opportunity brought an unexpected sense of ease. Or your stomach tightened while your mind was still assembling the facts.
We call this intuition — a rapid sense of knowing that arrives before conscious reasoning catches up. It can feel mysterious, but it is not irrational. Your brain and body are continually detecting patterns, recalling experience, monitoring internal sensations and evaluating what may be safe, rewarding or risky. Much of that work happens outside conscious awareness.
Why intuition can feel physical
The scientific term interoception describes how the nervous system senses and interprets signals from inside the body — heartbeat, breathing, muscle tension, temperature, digestion. Your brain integrates those signals with memory, emotion and information from the environment. The result may surface as a flutter, a heaviness, a warmth, or a quiet sense of “yes” or “no.”
The gut has its own extensive neural network, the enteric nervous system, and it communicates with the brain through neural, hormonal, immune and metabolic pathways — the gut–brain axis. Research supports a real relationship between that communication and emotion, motivation and cognition. But the popular phrase “second brain” is a metaphor. The gut does not reason through your life choices, and science has not shown that the microbiome delivers reliable answers to complex decisions.
Your body may register a pattern before you can name it
A classic 1997 study used the Iowa Gambling Task to examine decision-making under uncertainty. Participants began showing anticipatory physiological responses before choosing from riskier card decks, and in the original interpretation often shifted toward better choices before they could fully explain the strategy. Those findings advanced the idea that learned bodily signals — sometimes called somatic markers — can influence decisions before explicit reasoning is complete.
Later researchers questioned how unconscious that knowledge truly was. That debate matters. The strongest takeaway is not that the body holds a magical truth detector. It is that good decisions can draw on rapid, partially conscious learning and deliberate analysis.
When intuition helps — and when it misleads
Intuition is most useful when you have meaningful experience in the situation. A skilled leader notices a shift in team dynamics before identifying the exact cue. An experienced clinician, athlete or parent recognises a familiar pattern because the brain has compressed years of learning into a quick impression.
Fast judgements can also carry fear, prejudice, wishful thinking, fatigue and outdated protective responses. Stress makes ordinary sensations feel urgent. Past hurt labels uncertainty as danger. Familiarity gets mistaken for safety, and difference for threat.
A gut feeling is a signal to investigate — not an instruction you must obey.
A five-step practice for wiser intuition
- Pause. Take three slow breaths before assigning meaning to the sensation.
- Name the signal. Where do you feel it — chest, stomach, throat, shoulders? Is it tightening, warmth, energy, heaviness or ease?
- Separate sensation from story. “My stomach tightened” is data. “This will fail” is an interpretation.
- Check the context. Ask whether experience, evidence, stress, bias, grief, hunger, fatigue or an old fear may be shaping the response.
- Integrate. Compare the signal with the facts, your values, trusted counsel and the likely consequences — especially for high-stakes choices.
Practise in low-risk moments: a walking route, a meal, the order you tackle routine tasks. Notice your first response, record it, and watch the outcome. Over time you learn which sensations reflect grounded recognition, and which tend to arrive with urgency or anxiety.
The goal is not blind trust — it is deeper self-awareness
Intuition and reason do not need to compete. Intuition brings forward subtle information; reflection examines it. Your body helps you notice what your conscious mind has not yet articulated, while evidence and values help you decide what to do next.
The more skilfully you listen, the more choice you create. You are not ignoring the signal, and you are not surrendering to it. You are learning to hear the whole system — and respond with clarity.
